Throwing the Ultimate Inside Out-Themed Halloween Party
Halloween has always been one of our family's favorite traditions. For the last several years, instead of heading out for trick-or-treating, we've thrown our own Halloween party for the kids, nieces, and nephew. It’s a safer, cozier way to celebrate, and the kids get to enjoy games, food, and lots of laughs—all within the comfort of home.
This year, the theme was inspired by Inside Out, the animated movie that brings emotions to life. Each of the kids dressed up as one of the emotions, and their creative takes on the characters were both hilarious and heartwarming!
Let’s start with the youngest of the bunch, my niece, who embodied Envy with a teal headband and matching shirt to complete her outfit. My nephew was a blue version of Enui (we couldn’t find a purple shirt, so he looked more like Sadness with his face painted blue—though he wasn’t thrilled about that comparison). My oldest niece went for ultimate coziness, embracing her role of embarrassment in a butter-soft pink sweater perfect for the first taste of sweater weather. Naturally, Aunt Jess thought it was a perfect addition to her school wardrobe.
Then came my middle child, who embodied Anger with a homemade pipe cleaner headband (because who doesn’t need some creative DIY in their costume?). Lastly, my littlest one went all out as Disgust, decked out in green from head to toe, complete with matching sunglasses for the full effect. Oh, and I can’t forget about my own costume—I was Anxiety, thanks to my daughter’s creative touch! She crafted a brilliant pipe cleaner headband to represent my character’s bright orange hair, which I styled in a high ponytail to pull off the look.
As with any great Halloween party, the games are where the real fun happens! We played trivia, making sure the questions were fun for all ages, and had a candy toss that brought out everyone’s competitive side. But the highlight of the night had to be our mummy wrapping contest. Each player got a roll of streamers and wrapped themselves up like mummies. I laughed until my side hurt watching the chaos unfold!
No party is complete without food, and we kept it simple yet festive with our favorite cookies, themed cups for drinks, and of course—pizza! After all, keeping the energy up for games and costume fun requires fuel.
To top it all off, we had prizes for the games, and because it’s Halloween, everyone was a winner. It was a perfect way to end our spooky night, filled with laughter, fun costumes, and plenty of memories.
There’s nothing quite like keeping family traditions alive, and I love that each year, our Halloween party gives us a chance to be creative, spend time together, and make sure the kids have a safe (and sugar-filled) evening. Who knows what next year’s theme will be, but we’ll be ready to make it just as fun!
