I am a child of the 90s. I grew up loving save by the bell, boy meets world, seventh heaven, and full house. I wanted to be Donna Jo Tanner. These shows always ended with a little moral. Even when I was younger I understood most of the lessons shared. When I heard about full house hitting the stage again I was beyond thrilled. The original hasn’t ever been off air and continues to be a joy. One of which i have shared with my own children, and other children i care about. I counted the days until finally netflix released the new full house, now named fuller house. That night I went to my best friends house and began watching the show with our daughters. I knew the comedy would be cheesy. With all the silly lingo coming back. Like uncle Jesse’s “how mercy”and Stephanie “how rude”. However, I like cheese so this part didn’t deter me. Unfortunately, something is now becoming a problem. As I make my way through the first season of fuller house. I don’t feel the show is very family friendly. Mind you I am watching with a 7 year old and a 11 year old girl. Both at impressional stages of life. Frankly, it has conformed itself into the 2016 culture. Where Kardashian are known more than who sits in the house of representive seats. Just last month 10% of college age students believed judge judy was more than just a just on tv. Now there are scenes like a man misleading dj into her thinkin he is a plumber. When she makes a remark like i need your help with my pipes the audience laughs. The topics are Drinking is made to be cool stephanie, a recovering addict in real life, makes remarks about drinking casually. Wheras in the original drinking is a very serious thing. In an episode where Dj and her bestie are at a party kimmy has too many drinks. Dj takes her home after fighting for her keys. When dj , played by Candace Cameron Bure, tells her she explains it wasn’t to be mean. The reason was much bigger. She didn’t want her in driving drink. Then she goes on to explain, the unknown character of her mother was killed by a drunk driver. I understand that character isn’t a real life person. However in real life outside of tv land people are affected by alcohol in serious ways. Each year more than 10,000 people die in alcohol related car wrecks. This is an episode that causes me to cry everytime I watch because the lessons a real one. There are several old episodes that even now as I watch at 28 years still pull at those heart strings. Such as the episode where the girls grandfather, Papuli, visits and passes away in his sleep. These episodes are my favorite to share with my own children, because they are the most relatable. They have lost grandparents. Not only haven’t the endings of the new series really had a heart to heart lesson. I also feel like the writers are underhandly making sex a funny topic. This isn’t different from any other show on television right now. My children enjoy television and movies as do most. However, sex is brought into humor far too often. Even on the cartoon spongebob the humor can be downright inappropriate. I believe the reason full house never went off air is it continued to be a show that was relatable in real life while remaining to be clean comedy. I know that the old full house wasn’t perfect either. I do recall an episode where uncle Jesse and rebbecca had recently been married and locked Michelle out of the attic apartment. When she was telling Joey she was mad because of it she asked “what are they doing up there”. Uncle Joey replies the couple is doing taxes. Then she continues and ask are they going to be doing them every night. With his reply being “for the first couple of months”. Underhandly talking about sex. Now when I was a child I didn’t comprehend this was the topic of the scene. However that is the only episode I recall this kind of humor. I have only watched the first half of the episodes and I see a pattern continuing. In every episode someone underhandly uses sexual induiondos as humor. While in our society people say sex sells. From what I understood the reason the fuller house staff chose netflix is because ratings don’t exist. That it is for pure family enertainment. While the characters are a comfort for me, I cringe when one of my girls asks what does that mean? Children are influenced by what they watch, and hear. Fuller House should have continued to be a clean safe place for me to spend time with my favorite girls. I am unsure if I will finish the season because frankly, I’m disappointed. I’m disappointed that the actor’s and writers didn’t have enough confidence in the fans. Like if the show would have stayed pure to it’s own roots, we wouldn’t watch. I would advise parents to screen the shows before sharing with your children. If you choose to share with young ones use this platform as a place to open the dialogue up. To put in your own moral lessons at the end of each episode.
